Abby & Thomas | Holland Performing Arts Center | Omaha, Nebraska

Abby and Tom were married on a beautiful warm day in Omaha, Nebraska.
They had their ceremony at St Patricks Catholic Church, then we took a party bus around downtown Omaha for photos with the reception at the gorgeous Holland Performing Arts Center. I had such a great time photographing their wedding, and visiting Omaha for the first time!

Tom and Abby met while they were both undergraduate students at the University of Nebraska – Lincoln. Abby opted for the random roommate assignment for dorm life, not expecting that it would play such a significant role in her future. Abby roomed with Audrey, a Gretna native who was dating (and now married to) Cameron, Tom’s roommate for the year. Abby and Tom’s first encounter was in the college cafeteria. Abby was planning to meet with Audrey after class for lunch one day. Tom happened to be in the cafeteria at the same time, so Audrey sat with him and his friends and saved Abby a seat. Anybody who knows Abby would not be surprised that she selected cereal for her lunch, and anybody who knows Tom would not be surprised to learn that his first words to Abby were, “that’s what you’re having for lunch.” Sounds like love at first sight.

Although the cafeteria encounter is everything a Princess could ask for in meeting her Prince Charming, neither Abby nor Tom expected the meeting to progress to anything more than friendship, despite all of Audrey’s efforts to change that. For the remainder of the school year, Abby and Tom saw each other frequently during mutual friend events, but friendship was the extent of their relationship. School ended, and Tom studied abroad in Europe and Abby headed back to her hometown for the summer. The following fall, the couple met up again and decided to further their relationship. Tom made it “official” on January 25th, 2012 when he asked Abby to be his girlfriend. It’s been bliss ever since.

Azita and Andy | Rancho Las Lomas

I feel incredibly lucky to photograph so many couples on one of the happiest days of their lives. Every Wedding is unique and filled with special moments. One of my favorites things about Azita and Andy’s Wedding was the Sofreh Table used during their ceremony. Its a Persian ceremonial tradition that has been practiced for thousands of years. I especially loved family members taking turns to rub sugar cones over the couples canopy, showering them with sweetness. They also did a honey exchange, where they dip their fingers into honey and feed it to each other, this symbolizes that they will feed each other sweetness throughout their lives together. They were Married at Rancho Las Lomas in Silverado, CA. Victoria Flame Events made everything look beautiful!

CHRISTIE & ARTHUR | Omni Rancho Las Palmas

Christie and Arthur came all the way from Missouri to have their wedding in Palm Springs. Christie and her family have been vacationing there for years and its a special place for them. Christie’s sister got married there too! We emailed and chatted by phone for a year leading up to their wedding and it was so fun getting to know them. All of the beautiful details were custom made by Christie’s Mom, and were a surprise to the couple. Thanks to Rafunzel at the Omni Rancho Las Palmas for making their day perfect!

Zully & Roberto | Chuck Jones Center for Creativity

Zully and Roberto’s wedding was filled with so many unique and colorful details, I had a blast getting to know these two and documenting their beautiful day at the Chuck Jones Center for Creativity. The gallery is one of my favorite venues! I always like to hear how couples meet and where they gather their inspiration, here’s what Zully had to say:

“Roberto and I met through friends of friends and hit it off through our shared appreciation for indie music and animation. It was important for us to have a wedding that reflected who we were as a couple and the end result was so personalized that we hand picked or made almost everything. Roberto works in the animation industry and is an independent game developer. It was only fitting that the venue, Chuck Jones Center for Creativity, is an art gallery for the created of many famous characters such as Bugs Bunny. The crisp white walls with original illustrations was a perfect backdrop for the contemporary and whimsical wedding we had. Our electronic save the date was an online game created by Roberto where players helped guide me though obstacles to save Roberto from an evil villain. Roberto (with much of my input) created all of the printed materials such as the invitations, seating charts, menu cards, and tote bags. We had guests send us a doodle along with their RSVP, and as a surprise we displayed their responses on a pin board, incorporating their art amongst the other artwork on display at the gallery.

I love children and have dedicated much of my life work to helping youth in need. Above all, I treasure the children in my life and they were just as important guests in our wedding as the adults. We wanted to be sure that they were equally considered, so we created a custom activity book & kit to keep them entertained.

We decided to go with a geometric theme because the contemporary clean lines appealed to our aesthetic and it felt like it would be a fun theme. Roberto and I also love bright colors and wanted our wedding to be vibrant with life. The walls of the gallery worked as a perfect canvas for our paper geometric shape backdrop and pops of fuchsia, teal, and coral. We wanted our guests to bring out their inner child and have fun throwing multi-colored pom poms and paper airplanes while we walked down the isle.

We also had the help of very talented friends–the best man owns a 3D printer, so we 3D printed our table numbers and spray painted them rose gold. A talented graphic designer friend created the geometric shaped box for wedding cards and accompanying logo. Everything was personalized, from the geometric vases we found in LA’s Flower District, to the kale and coffee beans in my bouquet.

All of the DIY was time consuming but it was worth creating the vision that we had for a wedding that incorporated our personalities.”

Kimberly & Franklin | Santa Margarita Ranch

Kimberly and Franklin have known each other since they were kids. Franklin told me the story of how they met…

“We’ve known each other for nearly 50 years. Our parents were very good friends and they were God parents to each other’s children. However, her parents moved to Hawaii for several years and that’s where Kim was born. They moved back to the mainland when Kim was 7. We met at summer camp that same year. I was 9.

We were on a hike and it was very hot. Kim fainted. I carried her back to the nurse. It was an instant connection. We were best friends from that moment and remained best friends even though we married different people and Kim moved with her husband to the middle east for several years.

When my first marriage ended, Kim was already divorced and was living in Culver City. She helped me through my divorce and, somewhere along the way, I realized she was no longer just my best friend and I did not want to be parted from her.

I was very nervous about telling my best friend that I was in love with her. What if she didn’t feel the same way? She’d been my best friend literally my entire life and I didn’t want to lose that! When I finally got up the nerve to tell her, she told me she’d known for quite a while and was just waiting for me to figure it out.”

I love how their invitations reflect their childhood connection. They were Married at beautiful Santa Margarita Ranch surrounded by family and friends.

Sarah + Ricardo | Museum of Latin American Art

These two first met working for Clear Channel Radio, Ricardo was working in IT and Sarah needed help, they struck up a friendship via help tickets. Ricardo then requested her as a friend on MySpace (yes MySpace!) but she declined it because she didn’t recognize him in his profile photo (looking too cool in sunglasses). She realized her mistakes and the friend request was accepted! Their friendship blossomed, they became friends on instant messenger, and started chatting at work every day. He ripped DVDs of live U2 concerts to put on her iPod. They set up regular Wednesday lunch dates. They graduate to texting after work and over weekends. Long story short, they have been inseparable ever since. I hear they had a VERY long engagement, but they finally did it! They were married at the Museum of Latin American Art in Long Beach, such a beautiful location, surrounded by color and art. I became instant friends with these two, and I couldn’t be happier for them, they are the real deal.

DOUG + JOHN | RANCHO SANTA ANA BOTANIC GARDENS

Doug and John met in 2009 at a birthday party in Ottawa for mutual friends from their grad school at McGill. John finished his masters degree in Political Science in 2007 and moved to Ottawa, Canada for work, and Doug had started his PhD in the same department in 2007, so they had a lot of friends in common! Doug had driven down from Montreal with a couple of people (including Sarah, their Wedding Officiant), and had extra space in his car, so he gave John a ride home when the party ended. They went on their first date a few weeks later, when Doug came back to Ottawa for an afternoon. The rest is history!

They were Married on a beautiful sunny California day at Rancho Santa Ana Botanic Gardens in Claremont. Congratulations to Doug and John! And thank you for letting me capture your special day!

Walnut Grove Wedding | Zoe & Yun

I was so happy when Zoe and Yun told me they were getting Married at the Walnut Grove at Tierra Rejada Farms, its one of my favorite locations! The weather was beautiful that day, and they were surrounded by their close friends and family.

I love hearing how people meet! They met online on OKCupid in 2013. Zoe emailed Yun first but Yun had just gotten off the website. A year later, Yun saw Zoe’s profile and emailed her without ever seeing Zoe’s initial email. They went to kaiten sushi (conveyor belt sushi) on their first date. Zoe said she was afraid of little round food, so they got brick toast instead of boba drinks. Many delicious meals later, they got married.

Zoe and Yun, thank you so much for letting me be a part of your special day!

Yuma Arizona, Melisa & Bill Married!

This wedding was so much fun to shoot! Melisa is my childhood friend, we were best buddies in the 6th grade, and we were obsessed with the movie The Outsiders, we would watch it over and over, “stay golden pony boy!” I watched my first MTV video at her house, Madonna! And her big sister Tina, was so cool, she would give us makeovers. We lost touch over the years, so I was so excited when she contacted me to photograph her wedding! I asked her how she met Bill, she had this to say, “Bill and I met through a mutual friend, he courted me for about three months. Would come over and make me and the kids wonderful dinners. Finally when I decided I would accept his date proposal we were set to go to dinner and a movie on a Wednesday night. He called me from the hospital and had to cancel because he had fallen while running along the river. He had broken his wrist in two places and needed surgery. About a week later he called and with his broken arm he mended my heart and took me to a wonderful dinner and made me laugh and smile.”

Melisa wanted a garden theme, and she transformed a friends backyard into the wedding of her dreams. She put so much work into all of the little details. Her cake was a bucket filled with flowers, amazing! Thanks to all of her friends and family for making me and my husband feel so welcome.
